The exhibition "Vuk Karadžić and the Germans" opened at the University of Hamburg

10.11.2022.

The exhibition “Vuk Karadžić and the Germans" was opened on November 10, 2022 at the University of Hamburg. The Exhibition is organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Berlin and the "Vuk Endowment".

The exhibition, which was produced by the "Vuk Endowment" under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia at the initiative of the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Federal Republic of Germany Dr. Snežana Janković, is a testimony of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić's cooperation with famous Germans such as Goethe, Schiller, the Brothers Grimm and others, as well as about the time he spent in Germany almost 200 years ago.

At the opening ceremony at the University of Hamburg, Prof. Dr. Robert Hodel, director of the Institute of Slavic Studies, pointed out the importance of the translation work of Goethe, Jacob Grimm and the other  translators who came after them for familiarizing the German and European public with Serbian and South Slavic folk literature.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Federal Republic of Germany Dr. Snežana Janković, addressing the audience, emphasized that Vuk Karadžić's cooperation with the great writers and philosophers of German culture two centuries ago resulted in the spiritual and cultural connection of our peoples, enriching the German cultural space with curiosity and interest in Serbian folk literature. She said that the Embassy of Serbia in Berlin and the "Vuk Endowment" wanted to bring the audience, both in Germany and Serbia, closer to the fact that beneath the sediments of history and difficult moments, which occasionally marked Serbian-German relations, exists such a treasure of mutual understanding, appreciation and desire to get to know each other better.

On behalf of the "Vuk Endowment", the audience in Hamburg was addressed by Prof. Dr. Boško Suvajdžić, one of the co-authors of the exhibition and president of the "Vuk Endowment" Board of Directors. Having familiarized the attendees with the process of creating the exhibition, Prof. Suvajdžić took the audience through the most important places, characters and events that marked Vuk's collaboration with the intellectual elite of Germany in the 19th century.

Dr. Jasmina Mitrović Marić, Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Kingdom of Denmark, was a guest at the opening. She introduced the audience to Vuk's contacts with Danish writers of that era too, illustrating the influence and reach of Vuk's work among the intellectual elite of Europe at the time.

Among the numerous visitors, the opening of the exhibition was attended by professors and students of Slavic studies at the University of Hamburg, representatives of German cultural and educational institutions and numerous prominent representatives of the Serbian diaspora.

The opening of the exhibition in Hamburg was supported by the German Society for Southeast Europe (Südosteuropa - Gesellschaft).

The exhibition will be on display at the University of Hamburg until December 10, 2022, after which it will move to other cultural and university centers in Germany, such as Berlin, Jena, Halle and others.

Awarding of prizes to the students of the Serbian language Supplementary School in Germany for the best works written as part of the competition "Serbian language, guardian of our identity"

5.11.2022.

On November 5th, 2022 a ceremony was held at the Embassy of Serbia on the occasion of the awarding of prizes to the students of the Serbian language Supplementary School in the Federal Republic of Germany for the best works written in the literary competition "Serbian language, guardian of our identity".

56 students from 1st to 8th grade of elementary school from all parts of Germany participated in the competition, of which 12 were awarded. The best works were awarded certificates and books of famous Serbian writers provided by the Embassy.

The aim of the competition was to encourage Serbian children who were born, grow up and study in Germany to think about why it is important for them to cultivate the knowledge of the Serbian language and the Cyrillic alphabet.

Addressing the audience, Ambassador Dr. Snežana Janković pointed out, among other things, that the joint task of the Embassy and the Supplementary School in the Serbian language is to nurture the Serbian language and the Cyrillic alphabet among our children living abroad, thereby preserving their identity and awareness of their roots. She thanked the parents, who, in addition to their numerous obligations, contribute significantly to the work of supplementary schools in Germany and set aside time so that their children regularly attend Serbian language classes.

The ceremony at the Embassy was attended by award-winning students from Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main and Munich, their parents and teachers, as well as the coordinator of the Supplementary School for the Serbian Language in Germany Ms. Biljana Bukinac.

Interview of the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Federal Republic of Germany Dr. Snežana Janković for "Rozhlad", a cultural magazine of Lusatian Serbs

4.11.2022.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to the Federal Republic of Germany Dr. Snežana Janković, gave an interview to "Rozhlad", a cultural magazine of Lusatian Serbs from Bautzen, which was published in the latest edition of this Magazine. In the interview, she pointed out that the Serbs are culturally very close and historically connected to the Lusatian Serbs, but that most of our citizens have not had the opportunity to get to know the culture of the Lusatian Serbs in more detail.

Bearing in mind significant cultural closeness, which is also reflected in the language, customs and costumes, Ambassador Janković pointed out that it would be good for both sides to make a serious effort to get to know each other better, among other things, through the cooperation of our cultural and educational institutions. The room for cooperation exists in numerous areas, from education, science and culture to the economy, pointing out that it is especially important to focus on cultural cooperation, which gives us the opportunity to get to know each other better.

Ambassador Snežana Janković also reflected on her visit to Lower Lusatia in May this year, evaluating it as very successful. She emphasized that the visit was only the first step towards establishing cooperation with the Lusatian Serbs and expressed her hope that she would have the opportunity to visit other regions where Lusatian Serbs live and that from those contacts a mutually beneficial, enriching cooperation between two close peoples will develop.
